A Coastal Retreat Designed for Gathering

Some custom homes are built to simply maximize space, while others are designed around the way people move about their day and spend time together.

After enjoying their original Avalon home for over two decades, these homeowners had reached a point where the space no longer supported their lifestyle and couldn’t accommodate all the extended family and friends they loved to host. With their children now in college, their vision was clear: a custom home designed to bring family and friends together.

Having built both their primary residence and their parents’ home with Thompson Communities, they came back to the custom home construction team they already knew and trusted to create a thoughtfully crafted coastal modern farmhouse that embraces its surroundings and includes welcoming spaces for making lasting memories.

Reimagining the Existing Property 

Instead of remodeling, the homeowners chose to completely tear the existing home down to the bare lot and start fresh, designing every square foot around their long-term goals.

The new home expanded from four bedrooms and three bathrooms to six bedrooms, each with a full en suite bathroom, and two half baths, so every guest can enjoy comfort and privacy when they visit this luxury coastal home.

One of the most impactful design decisions was placing the kitchen and great room on the third floor, capturing sweeping views while creating a gathering, cooking, and dining space centered around the surrounding landscape.

An elevator makes it convenient to move between levels without compromising architectural flow.

Designing Around the Site 

Thoughtful design is essential for building a luxury custom home, but such a project also demands careful planning around the unique conditions of the property.

This home was designed to satisfy floodplain requirements, height restrictions, and fire code regulations while creating the open floor plan the homeowners dreamed of.

To achieve this, we had to closely coordinate every detail throughout the planning phase, resulting in a final design that maximized both functionality and incredible views.

A Home Built for the Next Chapter  

Every element of this luxury custom home was selected to create timeless architecture balanced with the relaxed character of Avalon.

It took about 16 months to complete, including six months of design, planning, and permitting, followed by ten months of construction.

The result is a gathering place intentionally designed around what matters most to the homeowners: family, hospitality, and coastal living. From the expanded bedroom layout to the open living spaces, each architectural decision supports how they plan to enjoy their home for decades to come.
