Questions We Wish Every Homeowner Asked Before Working With Us

Thompson Communities: Your Local Expert in Custom Design and Build

Choosing a builder for a major renovation, addition, or custom home involves more than comparing portfolios and estimates. The right questions can reveal how a company plans, communicates, solves problems, and takes responsibility for your home.

At Thompson Communities, we believe homeowners deserve straightforward answers before making such an important commitment. Here are 13 questions we encourage you to ask any builder you’re considering, along with insight into how we approach the process.

Choosing the Right Builder

1. What should I look for when choosing a custom home builder or remodeling contractor?

Look for a builder with relevant experience, a clearly defined process, and a demonstrated ability to manage projects similar to yours. Beautiful finished homes matter, but understanding how a company achieves those results is equally important.

Ask how the builder approaches planning, who oversees construction, and how they handle challenges. A good working relationship depends on trust, accountability, and clear expectations long before construction begins.

At Thompson Communities, more than 50 years of construction experience inform how we evaluate projects, anticipate challenges, and guide homeowners through important decisions. It’s important to us that the quality of the experience reflects the quality of your finished home.

2. Who will I work with throughout my project?

At Thompson Communities, homeowners work directly with company leadership, including Matt Thompson. This provides a clear point of contact for important questions and decisions throughout the project.

We operate with a close-knit team, so our clients don't have to navigate multiple layers of management to reach the people overseeing their work.

This personal involvement helps maintain accountability and continuity from early planning conversations through construction.

3. How will you communicate with me during construction?

Thompson Communities prioritizes direct, personal communication through site visits, meetings, phone calls, texts, emails, and conversations with our team. We don’t rely on automated client portals as the primary way to keep homeowners informed. Instead, we make room for direct discussions about project progress, upcoming decisions, and questions that arise during construction.

Your builder should set clear communication expectations from the beginning, so you understand how updates will be shared and who to contact when something needs attention.

Planning Your Project

4. Why is early planning so important before construction begins?

Early planning helps establish a realistic project scope, identify potential complications, and align construction decisions with your priorities before work begins.

For example, changing a kitchen layout could affect plumbing, electrical work, cabinetry, and the construction schedule. Identifying those connections early helps homeowners understand the implications of their decisions before they become more difficult to adjust.

We encourage you to involve Thompson Communities early in your project, even if your ideas are still taking shape. Our planning process helps clarify what’s possible, establish expectations, and coordinate the decisions and professionals needed to move forward.

5. How do I know if I should remodel, add on, or build a new home?

The right approach depends on your home’s existing condition, your property’s limitations, and how you want your living space to support you in the years ahead.

Each option serves a different purpose:

  • Remodeling may be appropriate when your home’s structure is sound, but its layout no longer supports your routines.
  • An addition can create room for entertaining, working from home, or accommodating a growing family.
  • Building a custom home might create the flexibility you need when your existing property can’t reasonably support your goals.

Each option comes with different structural, regulatory, and construction considerations. Because we work in remodeling, additions, and custom home construction, we can help homeowners evaluate their options based on practical feasibility and long-term priorities.

6. Who coordinates architects, designers, engineers, and specialty trades?

At Thompson Communities, we coordinate the trusted professionals and trade partners needed for your project, providing a central point of responsibility throughout construction.

A successful remodel or new build requires clear coordination between the professionals responsible for planning, technical requirements, materials, and execution. Without defined responsibilities, even well-developed plans can result in unnecessary complications.

We work with trusted architects, designers, engineers, specialty trade partners, and suppliers as needed, while our team manages construction and oversees how the different elements come together.

For homeowners, this means having a central construction partner who coordinates the work rather than juggling multiple independent relationships themselves.

Investment, Scheduling, and Construction

7. How do you help homeowners establish realistic investment expectations?

Thompson Communities discusses investment expectations early, beginning with your project goals, proposed scope, existing conditions, and priorities.

An estimate is most useful when you understand what's included and which decisions could change it. As plans develop, we work to align the proposed scope with your priorities and anticipated investment.

Discussing tradeoffs also helps homeowners understand how materials, structural changes, and other project decisions might affect the overall investment, so you can make choices that support both your immediate goals and long-term plans.

8. What affects the timeline of a remodeling or custom home project?

Project timelines depend on the scope and complexity of construction, permitting requirements, site conditions, material availability, and coordination of different trades.

A renovation involving structural changes and multiple living areas, for example, requires different sequencing than a project confined to one room. Custom home construction may involve additional site preparation, utility coordination, and municipal approvals.

At Thompson Communities, scheduling is part of the planning process. We consider the work involved and external factors that could affect progress, then communicate realistic expectations so you can plan accordingly.

9. What happens when unexpected issues or project changes arise during construction?

When unexpected conditions, scope changes, or scheduling challenges arise, our team communicates with homeowners to explain the situation and discuss the available options.

Even carefully planned construction projects can reveal unforeseen conditions, especially when renovating an existing home. A responsible builder will explain the issue, outline available solutions, and discuss any implications before proceeding with the affected work.

Our team reviews the available options and explain how proposed adjustments could affect your project’s investment or timeline. When circumstances beyond our control create delays, such as municipal approvals or weather, we focus on honest updates and realistic expectations.

Our priority is to keep homeowners informed and involved in the decisions that affect their project.

10. Can I stay in my home during a major renovation?

You may be able to stay in your home during construction, but it depends on which areas of your home are being renovated, the work involved, and the level of disruption your family can comfortably manage.

A project limited to one part of the home may allow daily routines to continue with temporary adjustments. More extensive renovations that involve kitchens, bathrooms, utilities, or structural work might make temporary accommodations a more practical option.

It’s important to consider access to essential rooms, noise, dust, safety, and the individual needs of everyone who lives in the home.

We encourage homeowners to discuss these concerns during planning so they can prepare for the realities of construction and make arrangements that support their family’s comfort.

Long-Term Value and Next Steps

11. How do you balance craftsmanship, everyday functionality, and long-term value?

A well-built home should provide more than an attractive appearance. Construction quality, a practical layout, and durable materials all contribute to how well the space will serve you over time.

Consider how your kitchen functions during a busy morning before work or school, how guests move between gathering spaces, or how an addition connects to the existing home. These everyday experiences are just as important as individual finishes or features.

At Thompson Communities, our construction approach focuses on attention to craftsmanship and lasting performance. Our goal is to help homeowners make thoughtful decisions that improve comfort, functionality, and long-term enjoyment of their homes.

12. What kind of support and warranty protection can I expect after construction?

Thompson Communities concludes projects with a final walkthrough and provides applicable third-party warranty protection to support homeowners after construction is complete.

Depending on the project and warranty program, coverage includes one year for workmanship, two years for major systems, and up to ten years for qualifying structural defects through 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty or 2-10 Remodeler's Choice Warranty.

The specific coverage and terms depend on the warranty issued for your project.

If you have concerns after project completion, you can contact us directly for guidance on the next steps. We want to ensure you understand the support available to you and how to address questions that arise after construction.

13. What should I expect during my first conversation with Thompson Communities?

Your first conversation with Thompson Communities is an opportunity to talk through your project goals, ask questions, and determine if our services are a good fit for what you’re planning. You don’t need to bring us finalized plans or have every detail worked out before you reach out.

Matt Thompson personally handles prospective client communication. Initial discussions typically explore the type of project you’re considering, its location, general scope, and investment expectations.

From there, we help determine the appropriate next step, which may include a more detailed consultation, further project evaluation, or additional planning.

Our approach is straightforward: understand your goals, provide useful guidance, and help you make an informed decision about moving forward.

What Our Clients Think

"We hired Thompson Communities to redo our kitchen. They were insightful on the layout and coloring and provided excellent ideas on how to make the most of our space and budget.
From start to finish, the project took 18 days.  18 days.  I have had other contractors do jobs and they usually drag on for months. We were concerned about this one because it was our kitchen.  But the team from Thompson knocked this out in an amazing timeline with jaw dropping results.

I would highly recommend them for anyone looking to complete a project. I have used them for another project and am getting ready to start my 3rd.  My opinion is that Thompson Communities are consummate professionals and are the level that other contractors should strive to meet."
